Executive Summary
Sawubona brings healing, creativity, and support to young people in Bridgeport through expressive arts therapy and community care. With the help of generous donors and volunteers, over 60 scholars participated in 30 sessions of after-school programming and a summer camp, making powerful first connections to mental health support.
Caring, Seeing, and Supporting Young People
Caring and truly seeing young people—hearing them exactly as they are—is the heart of Sawubona. Our mission is to bring them resources for growth and healing.
There’s a strong ideal in the mental health field: “Meet people where they are at.” Sawubona lives out this ideal every day, thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers.
Bringing Healing Programs to the Community

This year, we introduced our outstanding programming to the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club, with powerful and fruitful results.
Sawubona is expanding to meet more needs observed in the Bridgeport community, and this progress has only been possible through your support.
Who We Serve
The young people in the Sawubona After School Program and Summer Camp may face challenges such as:
- Loss and grief
- Financial hardship
- A parent’s mental health or substance abuse struggles
For many, Sawubona is their first experience with therapy and professional care. This first connection is an important step—helping them feel seen, heard, and supported.
We hope their time with Sawubona encourages them to seek help in the future, if ever needed.
Healing Through Expressive Arts
Young people heal through:
- Painting
- Video
- Crafting
- Poetry
- Movement
- Music
- And more
They use their own voices, creativity, and autonomy to grow and heal in their everyday environment.

Your Impact
Thanks to your generosity, over 60 scholars participated in 30 sessions of after-school programming and a vibrant summer camp, receiving expressive arts therapy, psychotherapy, and meaningful connection. This powerful experience was made possible by our 12 dedicated Board Members, eight core volunteers, and special guest expressive arts healers, who helped introduce students to a full spectrum of healing arts and support.
